SCHOOL SAFETY OFFICER

Decatur Heritage Christian Academy is seeking a full-time School Safety Officer who desires to be an integral part of the school community. It is a position that places the highest value on building strong, warm relationships with the school community while providing effective security and oversight of the persons and property pertaining to DHCA. A team of school personnel will be additionally be assembled, creating a Safety and Security Team, advised/directed by the SSO and created to provide some additional support related to the School Safety Officer’s duties and responsibilities.

General Duties

Builds positive relationships with the parents and students

Protect property, facilities, people on campus according to school handbook, law enforcement, fire safety standards

Works closely with school administrators in an effort to provide and maintain the school as a safe environment conducive to learning

Provides security for students by preventing and/or intervening in  physical and verbal acts of aggression as well as property damage or theft.

Provides direction and participates in drug prevention protocols

Monitors hallways and parking areas

Directs and  controls traffic as needed

Identifies and removes trespassers

Keeps detailed records and makes reports

Attends special events as directed by the school administration

Oversees the implementation of and serves as an advisor for the Emergency Handbook

Operates and appropriately maintains the law enforcement equipment

Required Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of the school’s core values

Knowledge of school policies and practices

Knowledge of appropriate practices related to law enforcement and fire safety

Knowledge of principles and practices of security supervision

Knowledge of First Aid and CPR

Ability to ascertain facts through personal contact and observation as well as the discernment to determine a proper course of action

Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine the proper course of action

Ability to build a strong rapport with school age children and teenagers

Ideal Qualifications

Meets the requirements of a certified police officer or has relevant military police experience

Meets the requirements of a certified fire fighter or other relevant training/experience in fire safety

Other Qualifications

The candidate for hire must:

1) Effectively articulate a clear testimony of faith in Jesus Christ and a lifestyle that reflects a deep commitment to his/her faith;

2) Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age;

3) Be a citizen of the United States;

4) Be a high school graduate or possess equivalency;

5) Not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to or entered a plea bargain to any felony charge or to any violation of federal or state laws or city ordinances related to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances;

6) Not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States;

7) Have fingerprints on file with the state bureau of investigation;

8) Have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician;

9) Be free of all apparent mental disorders as described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association. Applicants will need to be certified as meeting this criteria by a qualified professional in the psychiatric or psychological fields;

10) Possesses all necessary licenses and certifications associated with armed security school personnel
